When drilling with an overburden system, you need to have a diverter hood that sits on top of your casing to divert the cuttings, from the interior of the casing to a location away from the drill rig, preventing injuries to the operator and to keep a clean environment.

There is two kind of diverter available on the market:

The Xs pneumatic diverter. The diverter is attached to the rotation head with two air cylinders, and is operated by a pneumatic remote control valve situated on the control panel. The operator can raise and lower the diverter to expose the top of the drill tube, or add down pressure to the casing if necessary. The lower portion of the diverter will revolve on its bearing along with the casing, should the casing turn.

The bolt-on diverter needs to be installed time after time when adding casing. You need to unscrew the top seal, slip the diverter over the drill tube to reach the casing, then the lower collar needs to be bolt-on the casing. Often, the vibration imparted by the hammer will make the bolts to get loose. To prevent that, you need to start the welding machine again to spot weld the collar, thus reducing the vibration on the bolts. Whilst this method is the cheapest initial cost, the operation is labor intensive and time consuming, reducing your drilling performance at the end of the day.
